Why is there the option to register / log in?
Because some additional features are available to registered users.

And which features might that be?
A registered player can customize the web pages to a greater extent than an anonymous user. In addition to the publicly-available settings (language, design, font sizes) he can also make some changes to the list of online player and servers. Furthermore it is possible to define a list of befriended players called myBZbuddies. This list displays which of the players are currently online.

Where can I change the preferences?
Via myBZstats - myBZsettings you can set your preferred language, design, font size and more.

How can I add players to myBZbuddies?
Via myBZstats - myBZbuddies you can add players - provided that you are logged in. In addition, when you view a player's profile there is a link right below the player's callsign. By clicking on this link, the respective player is added to your buddy list (or removed from the list if he already was on it).

Why do I have to register for that? Can't you just use cookies?
Saving the preferences and buddy list on the server side has the advantage of not being tied to a particular browser and computer, but you can simply log in from anywhere and use your personal preferences. Also, some users are wary of cookies in general and the server-side storage does not have the tight limits on amount of data that cookies have.

How does this login work in the first place?
You can simply use your usual BZFlag login that you also use in your client and on BZFlag Forums.

Wait, I don't want to use my BZFlag password on non-official BZFlag sites!
Since using your global BZFlag login data beyond bzflag.org is insecure, there is the link "login @BZBB" below the vertical menu. Using it, you can safely log indirectly at the bzflag.org site which will redirect you and a verification token to the BZstats site.

What personal information is stored when I register?
Your name (callsign), the global bzID, your myBZbuddies list, your myBZsettings preferences and the date of your last login are stored.

Will this data be erased sometime?
Not automatically. But if you ask me to, I will erase them.

Will this data be given to third parties?
No, but they are not really of interest to anyone anyway...
